What am I looking for this year? I like stories with main characters that lean toward the quirky side (can be read as not part of the cool crowd). Characters that will learn and grow throughout the book until they better understand their role in the world around them. It doesn't matter if the MC is a boy or a girl. I like stories that move at a fast pace - take me for a ride! I like adventure, mystery, light fantasy, some paranormal, but with hint of humor woven through that is not over the top/in your face.
I am not best suited for contemporary, sad tales, or historical fiction (unless it contains a good bit of what I do like).
I want to work with a person who is willing to listen to my take on their work and not get defensive. When asking for feedback, you will hear a variety of different suggestions on how to improve your story. I am looking for a mentee who has a sense of humor and doesn't take themselves too seriously. There is enough stress and anxiety over editing and submitting, sometimes you just need to laugh.
I am not a grammar wizard, but I do have a good eye for the subtle nuances that create depth in a scene or display small glimpses into character (body language, non-verbal cues to who they are). I tend to sit with your manuscript at first to go through the whole thing and then connect with you (best over phone) to go chapter by chapter. I sometimes come up with small slants to the story that are purely "take it or leave it" feedback that is just for you to chew on (may open you to ideas that you haven't thought about yet that could be really cool or just not your cup of tea).
Feel free to contact me if you have any direct questions. You can reach me via Twitter the easiest.
